The Research Hot Topics Webinar Series is designed to keep you informed of evolving research regulations. Experts from the Office of Research & Partnerships (ORP) Operations group will present and answer questions on the topic of the day and any other research questions.

This workshop is a comprehensive guide designed to equip researchers with foundational knowledge in biostatistics and study design. You will learn to establish a clear research question, select a population to study, explore various study designs, and maintain ethical considerations. You will also learn how the Biostatistics and Study Design Service team can support you throughout the process.

This workshop introduces the basic principles of power analysis and sample size calculation for both animal and human research. We will review the general framework of statistical hypothesis testing, cover different factors affecting power like study design, outcome measures, statistical tests, and effect sizes, and then discuss the increasingly important issue of multiple comparisons and the implications for power analysis. You will learn how to use a free software package to perform power analysis and sample size calculation in simple situations. You will also learn the typical information needed by the Biostatistics and Study Design Service to perform these tasks for you.
